Panel Discussion: Future Directions for Applications of Ceramic Science and Applications: Realism vs Idealism

Each of the panelists will present a short overview of the potential advances and challenges facing the communities they represent. The moderators will facilitate a discussion of the issues listed below. Do you have an opinion? Add it to the website. Are there other critical issues concerning topics in the other sessions? Feel free to register your opinion on any or all of these topics. The electronic discussion will be continuously posted as will serve as the starting point for the panel session.

• Will self assembly ever lead to functionality in 3-D?
• Combinatorial approaches: producing new knowledge or only new data?
• Integration of functional ceramics in MEMS is required to achieve most goals.
• In 10 years nitrides will be the source of all lasers and most lighting.
• Multi-parameter optimization: is frequency agility possible in real systems?
• Will ceramics save Moore's Law?
• Computational materials science is over-rated!!
