The notation for binary alloys uses \bgroup\color{blue}$ X_A$\egroup and \bgroup\color{blue}$ X_B = 1 - X_A$\egroup for the composition. Because, there is only one free composition variable, sometimes people will simply use `` \bgroup\color{blue}$ X$\egroup'' to represent the amount of the second component--in our case \bgroup\color{blue}$ X = X_B$\egroup.
