$^\star \! D_i$ is the self-diffusivity of component $i$ in a chemically homogeneous binary system. $^\star \! D_i$ is related to $D_i$ as indicated. $^\star \! D_i$ is usually determined using an isotope. Because there is no net mass flow, the $C$ -frame is also a $V$ -frame, and either may be used.
