Previous: Background Statement
The purpose of this course is to give undergraduates in materials
science and engineering an introduction to most of the essential
mathematical concepts that they will need as part of a complete
undergraduate education.
This course is intended for sophomore who are just beginning their
major in materials science and engineering.
Students are expected to understand and be able to apply
concepts from basic calculus (integration and differentiation
of functions of a single variable, limits and continuity, fundamental
theorem of calculus, Taylor series) and from multi-variable
calculus (partial differentiation, vector differential operators,
multidimensional integration, vector algebra) although some
concepts will be reviewed as needed.
